Glossary of Terms

Online or Virtual – course is taught entirely online with face-to-face hours being accomplished electronically such as using Skype, Facetime or other electronic message boards. Videos may also be created to satisfy some course requirements.  Students can proceed sequentially at their own pace, with the instructor only around to evaluate the students. Virtual learning is a directed learning process, comprised of educational information (articles, videos, images, web links), communication (messaging, discussion forums) and some way to measure students’ achievement.

Hybrid – name commonly used to describe courses in which some traditional face-to-face "seat time" has been replaced by online learning activities. The purpose of a hybrid course is to take advantage of the best features of both face-to-face and online learning. May also be referred to as a "Blended" course.

Traditional – course is taught in a face-to-face “seat time” environment. Assignments may be completed outside of the classroom and posted in an online environment but students are expected to attend physical classes on a regular, recurring basis in order to earn their certificate of completion.

Flexible – start and end dates of the course are movable and can be adjusted based upon the needs of the students.

Scheduled – dates of the course have a specific start and end date as set by the instructor.

Instructor – an individual who has completed the NCDA Instructor Training program and is certified to teach the Facilitating Career Development (FCD) curriculum.

Master Trainer – any FCD instructor who has successfully completed the NCDA Master Trainer course and is eligible to train new instructor applicants.
