How often are cover letters read by employers?

Yesterday I was co-hosting a workshop on using personal strengths during the job search process, one of the students in attendance asked how often cover letters are read by employers and if they are really necessary - what are your thoughts on this topic? I wasn't sure of the statistics on how often cover letters are read by employers - of course they are many variables to consider - but I wanted to see if any of you were aware. Thank you in advance!
